Stamp Collecting Supplies

As you begin your stamp collecting journey the need to obtain some of the specialized tools and materials will become unavoidable. How do you protect your stamps? How can you show your stamps to others without opening a ziplock bag and dumping them onto the kitchen table?

A beginning collector needs an inexpensive pair of stamp tongs, stamp hinges or mounts, a good magnifying glass, a stamp identifier and a beginners album or stock book. Additional supplies such as glassine envelopes, cover sleeves and stock pages are helpful but not necessarily required for the beginning collector.

As knowledge of the hobby expands it will become necessary to obtain some of the more advanced tools: watermark detectors, perforation gauges, UV lights, stamp catalogs and a more expansive advanced album with detailed pages.

Whatever your needs may be there are local stamp dealers that are able to assist in obtaining these necessary tools. If you belong to a local stamp club you may even be able to obtain good used stamp collecting tools and materials from club members.

Here are a few websites that have stamp supplies for sale if a local source is unavailable.

The CYPHER Stamp Club tries to provide the basic stamp collecting tools to all members for free. This is made possible through the generous donations of the hundreds of members of the Rocky Mountain Philatelic Library, local stamp dealers and a number of national stamp dealers and organizations.

The Rocky Mountain Philatelic Library also has designated shelf space that is stocked with used albums, album pages and supplements, stock books, cover albums and miscellaneous stamp collecting materials. These are available for a small donation.

If the expense of purchasing a current stamp catalog is prohibitive, the Rocky Mountain Philatelic Library has an extensive holding of worldwide stamp catalogs. These are available for use to library members and some may be checked out and taken home for use. If you check an item out you must return the item.
