AIR MAIL STAMPS

Airmail stamps are used to pay the postage for a mail item to be transported by airplane rather than by train, ship or motorized vehicle. The United States issued its first airmail stamps in 1918. Airmail does not appear on this stamp but it does appear on later issues. Note the different languages for airmail: Poste Aerienne (Egypt), Air Mail (Canal Zone, Jordan), Air (Canada), Aer Post (Ireland), Correos Aereo (Costa Rica), Air (Canada) and Posta Aerea (Italy).
